Q: DVD Studio Pro & HD?

Hi,

I've heard it said that dvd studio only imports SD video, but yet it is also said that you can import h264 and mpeg2 files that were created from HD format? Is this correct? Can anyone refer a link that gives optimal settings in dvd studio for highest quality dvd? Thanks, joe

DVD Studio Pro creates SD DVDs...and also HD DVDs. Not BluRay, but the format that lost to BluRay...HD DVD. Those will only play on Macs, and Xbox 360s.

The way to make the best quality SD DVD is to output a self contained QT file...full quality. Take that into Compressor, apply the BEST QUALITY DVD setting that matches your total running time...and then take the resulting files into DVD Studio Pro, and author.

Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor in DVD STP, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."  Or choose PAN & SCAN and LETTERBOX...this way it'll detect if the monitor is 4:3, or 16:9, and act appropriately.

Thanks Shane! So, are you saying that the HD Dvds it creates cannot be played on HD TVs?

Can the HD DVDs Studio creates be duplicated at a duplication facility into playable DVDs for television? Thanks again, joe

No...they can only be played on Mac Computers, X-Box 360 game systems...and Toshiba HD DVD players. They will not work in BluRay or DVD players. They'll only playback in DVD players if you author them as SD DVDs.

The HD DVD format that Compressor/DVD Studio Pro makes is the format that lost the HD disc fight to BluRay. BluRay won..HD DVD is now a relic.

So then is it standard practice to author SD DVDs relative to consumer grade movies on dvd? Will SD DVD from DSP be a lower standard than what's on the market for movies that go to DVD? Do movie studios only use Encore and the like for DVD authoring if they want excellent quality? It was my understanding that a lot of professional movie makers still use DVD Studio pro when authoring to dvd. Am I wrong to say that? Thanks, joe

Well, Hollywood films are encoded with high end software, and pressed onto disks, not burned. Whole different process. But, with the tools you have at hand, this is the best you can do. And it's pretty good SD quality. If you want HD, then you'll need a BluRay burner and Encore.

    Shane,

I know i'm asking a lot of questions and will understand if you don't want to reply any further.

Do you know specifically what high end software hollywood uses to press onto disks? Is the final product from this process better than blue ray?

    I have encore.

    Thanks, joe

Big Hollywood studios use Scenarist. It only runs on Windows and is incredibly expensive - around $20000.

The discs are pressed at the same sort of plants that make commercial CDs, it's basically the same technology. Scenarist users can take advantage of specially certified plants that are connected to a network which allows online transfer of data directly from the software, instead of delivering on DLT tape, although this option is supported in case your duplicator of choice does not belong to the network.
