itunes6464.MSI and failure to uninstall

I cant get the program to install and the updater and raw download methods complains about not being able to remove the previous version. I tried uninstalling iTunes by hand and refused with the 'itunes64.msi' cannot be found. All the other programs can and were removed. When it downloads it comes as 'tunes6464.msi' and I cant change the name. Help?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

If the advice above doesn't resolve things you could try this alternate version:

iTunes 12.1.0.71 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - itunes64setup.exe (2015-01-28)

which is a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of the core application, similar to previous 64-bit releases.

Or roll back to the previous build:

Ok I got it working. I found a program installation repair tool on Microsofts website. Thanks for the replies. There was definitely something wrong with the download from apples site. This is on a hardcore gaming PC with an I7 4790k, gtx 970.. etc. Point is I ALWAYS do 64 bit everything when I can.

Like I said thanks for the help. 🙂

Managed to get iTunes installed on my Windows 8.1 machine. Kept getting the itunes6464.msi error. Couldn't install or uninstall. Ran the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility and the error disappeared, program installed and is working fine. The utility takes some time, so get a cup (or two) of coffee. When you can go to the program uninstall and it says it's already been uninstalled, its done its job! Happy Computing!.

You need to remove all the apple software with the "remove programs" in the control panel. Start with iTunes and work your way down. (I know, you get an error on iTunes, but try it anyway. After you've gone through the process with the apple software, go to Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility . Let it install. Scroll down till you find iTunes and let that program do it's thing. I let it run for about a half hour (it didn't stop on its own), and, while it was still running in the background, tried to remove iTunes again. Came up and said it was already removed. Stopped the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility and tried to install iTunes on the computer. Went through all the steps and installed without a problem. All I can say is it worked for me
