You need to be running Yosemite to use AirDrop with your iOS devices:
Share content with AirDrop from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Because the MacBook Air needs to be running Yosemite (OS X 10.10) for you to airdrop between an iOS device and a Mac.
Thank you. I have no idea what Yosemite is and how to install on MacBook air. Is it something useful? Just bought this new air so I assumed it would have everything I needed on it. Guess I was wrong:)
thank you.
Go into the Mac App store, and install it. There you will have simple instructions on how to install it.
Yosemite is the newest OSx for the Mac. Based on the version number you are showing for your Air in the original post, it is currently running Mavericks, which is the previous OS.

You need Mac OSx Version 10.10.0 also known as Yosemite. You need that version to be able to AirDrop between a Mac and an iOS device.
You can update directly through the Mac App Store.
