Let me put it in details.

I bounced my own track in Logic Studio, put it in an USB and play it on CDJ900 through DJM900 nexus. The sound quality drops significantly as the Hi Pass and Mid Pass do not sound the same as playing back in Logic. They sound like they are "shrinking in" with low proportion of volume. It was perfect when I was playing it in Logic though.

I would like to know what I might have done wrong during the "bouncing" or mixing.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks a lot guys!

In Logic, when bouncing what you hear is what you get. If a file sounds much worse on another playback device, then the first suspect is that playback device - NOT the soundfile.

I have hardly any idea of what you mean by "high pass and mid pass "shrinking in"". 😕

Do you mean you have less high and mid content, and therefore a bassheavy, muffled sound? Again, check the setting(s) your playback device(s) first, to me it sounds like it is (they are) the culprut.

Also, to what format did you bounce? PCM, MP3 or AAC?

Hi Eriksimon,

Firstly, thanks for your message.

What I meant by "hi pass mid pass shrinking in" is EXACTLY what you menat, I got a heavy bass and muffed high and mid content. Apologised for my poor English.

I haven't checked the setting of the playback device yet but instead I tested it with some professional produced tracks. I know the sound tends to vary a little bit when playing from computer and CD player such as the CDJ 900 that I am using. The differences were not as significant as my own track. They tend to get a rather good balance. My track is well balanced and mixed (I guess) in Logic but it turns out completely different when using the CD player.

I bounced my work to MP3 with highest BIte Rate.

I have listened to the MP3 via iTunes and my iPhone, both sound the same as Logic with no problem at all. I face the "heavy bass and muffed sound" problem only when I play it with CDJ/ DJM.

Sorry I am not at home with the DAW at the moment, but I shall do the screenshot later.

And no, I did not try bouncing it to PCM. May I ask if PCM is playable on CDJ/ DJM and able to upload to sharing sites like SoundCloud/ Mixcloud etc?

PCM is uncompressed and therefore lossless and therefore of better quality ; it is also bigger (that's the trade-off).

PCM is even "more standard" than MP3 and uploads fine to soundcloud, and I assume also to mixcloud.

PCM is not a format in itself; those are AIFF, CAF and WAV. WAV is the best option here, though all three formats are identical when it comes to the actual sound data.

The fact that your file sounds fine in other players means that it must be you player that's at fault somehow.

Thank you so much for the information on PCM, really appreciated that. I shall try bouncing it to PCM later when I get back home.

What I don't understand is that I tried to put some "professional produced" tracks to the player and the level of differences is so much less significant than playing my track. You mentioned that it might be the player at fault but I doubt this assumption since it sounds good when playing other professional produced tracks.

You should hook up the DJM stuff to the same amp & speakers that you use for listening to Logic. Only then you get a fair comparison. Unfortunately, these things are very hard to discuss, since it is all about your perception, and I have no idea what it is you hear or what your mix sounds like or indeed what the "professionally produced" tracks are.

One general thing I can say: a good mix should "translate" well, meaning it should sound (relatively) good on any playback system. This is why mixing on very transparant nearfield monitors in a well treated room is the best mixing setup. That, or using several different systems to judge the mix on - listening to it via the living room stereo, an old boombox or the car stereo is a very common approach, with the extra benefit that you take the mix out of the "delivery room" into the world, which also (psychologically) changes the way you listen to it.

Maybe you could put your mix (or a piece of it) on Soundccloud?

Why don't you import a "professionally produced" track into Logic and directly compare it to yours.

How much have you produced? Don't forget Pro Studios often use equipment costing many thousands of dollars... that said, it's mostly experience, a good producer could use Garageband and sound professional. It's 95% user, 5% equipment.

Someone that really knows how to mix has listened to their work over dozens of systems and knows what kind of sound they should go for to (As Erik said) "translate" well. Also, do you have a decent monitoring setup, what are you using for monitor (mixing) speakers?
