It's possible that whatever you are trying to do on the iPhone requires more space than the 2.5 GB you are showing available.
If your iPhone is giving alerts that the storage is full, I would suggest following the instructions in the article below to remove some content from the device. If that does not resolve the second issue of the phone being unresponsive, then you may need to backup and restore. I've highlighted the key information here for you. Click on the articles for complete details.
See how much storage you've used on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201656If your device is near its capacity or you get an alert that your storage is full, you can remove some of your less used content to make room for more.
View storage usage on your iOS device
Tap Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage to see the amount of space each app and its content takes on your device.
Tap an app for more detailed information about its usage.
Depending on the app, you might be able to delete some of the app's content, or delete the app and all of its content.

If your device doesn't respond when you press buttons
Your device might not return to the Home screen when you press the Home button, wake from sleep when you press the Sleep/Wake button, slide to unlock or power off, or it might appear frozen. Try these steps:
- Restart your device.
- If it still doesn't respond, or if it doesn't turn back on, reset your device.
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
- Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
- Put your device in recovery mode.
- When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
