iTunes 11 Won't Launch on 10.6.8 (crash report)

I'm in a bind.

I attempt to open iTunes on my spare computer and it will bounce for half a second then crash. It never opens.

I have tried

• deleting preferences

• deleting iTunes Library

• repairing permissions

• deleting SyncServices folder(s)

• unplugging internet/wifi

Here is my crash report where it tell me thread 0 has crashed.

If anyone can help it'd be greatly appreciated.

I can't point to a specific cause or help with the crash report other than it is something that lies in the difference between the user and regular account. The application itself seems to be okay.

Differences may be:

- Plug-ins.

- Preferences files including ones not only in your user area but also for that specific iTunes library.

- The library file(s) iTunes is trying to open.

- Possible permissions issues on files.

To narrow this down, try creating a new (test) iTunes library in the user account. Start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and create a new library. If that works then it is something specific about the other library and some of the files it is using. Some files can be deleted and will be re-generated such as the Genius file in the iTunes folder, and also the .xml (not .itl !!!) version of the library file. If it is the main library file you will have to rebuild that (another set of instructions) with some metadata loss. If creating a new library does not work then it may be something to do with user preferences. Moving the general iTunes preferences file out of the user library and starting iTunes may resolve the issue (the preferences file will be rebuilt with default settings).

Just so it is clear, when I say "user library" I mean the files in your User > Library folder. When I say "iTunes library" I mean the files in the User > Music > iTunes folder.

Re-read my earlier reply because I edited it.

The option key isn't rebuilding the library file (that is a different process), it is creating a brand new one. Since that is not working it is possible your iTunes preferences files are corrupt. Since you say iTunes is working in another account the combo update isn't going to help because that applies system-wide and the issue isn't system-wide. Then too the combo update probably well pre-dates iTunes 11.

I have deleted all pref files in relation to iTunes.

I have noticed in my crash reporter, there is a call to ABORT + 93 in my libsystem.B.dylib

Since essentially there is no iTunes library in my USER folder (I moved it out of that folder to see if it was an iTunes library issue) and iTunes continues to crash, I'm lead to believe its an issue with the above ABORT command found in my crash report and/or another issue.

I just reinstalled iTunes 11.4. I attempted to open and it just bounced in the dock and then crashed.

Here is the Crash Report...

While I see which thread has crashed there is sometimes a particular line with crash information which cryptically hints as to where the problem may lie. I am not seeing that. Maybe it isn't there or maybe it is further down.

By the way, avoid posting personal information such as UUID in reports.

As I have already observed I do not think this is a general iTunes application issue since it is only happening in this user account. The items specific to this account are your personal user preferences, scripts/plugins, and the library files (things in your Music > iTunes folder). Unless somebody comes along who can walk you through a detailed analysis of your crash logs an can interpret to what the error actually relates, the alternative is to try to track down the problem file(s) in your user account.

Unless I missed something I did not see if you tried my suggestion to create a new library using the option key + start method. If that works then it narrows the issue down to something bad in your user library since iTunes is still using the same preferences files and plugins.

May 7, 2015 8:32 AM in response to Limnos

I have tried the OPTION + start method but iTunes won't open that way either.

I have since pulled the drive and installed a new OS on another drive and once thats done installing I will put that drive in the computer and just work with that until I can get to the bottom of the issue.

Still perplexing to me.

Albeit, the computer wouldn't startup at all after I did some searching and deleting of files. I'm afraid I may have accidentally trashed a CARBON CORE file in my frameworks ... which could be causing the computer to not be able to startup?

At any rate, I'm going to install this new drive and see if it works.

I did do a scan of all the files on this OS drive (the one with the faulty iTunes) and no errors were reported so I'm still confused as to what the issue could be.
