What is the difference between Apple Diagnostic test and Apple hardware test?

I've just been wondering if one is better than the other? My mac shipped with apple hardware test, and I'm curious if the newer Apple Diagnostics is better

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), null

Apple Diagnostics is better, but no Mac model can use both it and the Apple Hardware Test.

and there is no way for me to override the hardware test and install the newer diagnostics?
