Q: Ye olde stuck in 'connect to itunes' after attempting to restore to factory

Hi everyone.

(I'm sure you've all seen this problem a gazillion times, and in-before-anyone-says "use the search feature", I have done, extensively all day, and have gotten nowhere despite applying the advice)

I've been gifted an iPhone 4, which was locked to EE. Online guide from Vodafone claimed that choosing to 'restore' your iphone via iTunes would restore to factory and remove the lock. Unfortunately what seems to have happened is, iTunes has attempted to update me to latest iOS, and in the process something has gone horribly wrong, now I'm stuck on the 'connect to itunes' logo. Connecting to my computer results in iTunes error message saying: "Your iPhone can't be updated; you must restore it to factory settings. If you previously backed up the iPhone, click Restore Backup after the restore process completes."

After completing the loading bar for 'Extracting software' I keep getting an error code 3014 which I've been able to ascertain is usually a connectivity issue. So far I have:

  • Put phone into DFU mode as it crashed on the Apple logo (with a grey line beneath), which is what imo created this loop
  • Setup port forwarding for all ports necessary for iTunes / iCloud
  • Attempted to use 3rd-party program to Exit Recovery mode, worked but then went straight back into recovery mode.
  • Disabled my firewall (Comodo) during attempt, still results in error code 3014
  • Created a new user profile with admin priviliges, error code 3014
  • Attempted to install an older firmware in case it's trying to update me to iOS8 or above, error code 3014
  • Reset my hosts file, zero entries yet again, error code 3014

I'm now at a complete loss as to what to try next... something tells me 'throwing at wall' or 'jumping up and down on' will not be viable solutions to the issue! Would greatly appreciate some help from the community.

Oh also worth mentioning, I don't have another PC or access to one at the mo to see if it's my PC's settings that are causing the issue.

Hello, First you have to install the latest version of iTunes and try to update or restore again. Check your hosts file After you update iTunes to the latest version, check the hosts file to make sure your computer can contact the update server. If you’re using a Windows computer, follow the steps in this Microsoft support article (note that resetting the hosts file will affect software services that rely on hosts file redirects). If you're using Windows on a business computer, consult your IT department to be sure applications will work correctly after you reset the hosts file.

Check this support document, if you haven't, for some additional troubleshooting steps. http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201442

If that will not do it, you can take a look at this and see if Recovery mode helps. If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

The last resort would be to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider for assistance in restoring.

Thanks guys, but what you've suggested (appreciative though I am for the input) is just repeating the advice I've been trying all day.

Interesting to note, I uninstalled my firewall (currently browsing very riskily!), and am now getting error code 3194 instead. I guess that's.... some kind of progress?

No, error 3194 states that you are trying to install software not designed for the device. Same support document I linked for you earlier. Are you just trying to restore the software through iTunes, or are you trying to do something manually? Did you try and download a file from another location and attempt to install it? Are you trying to downgrade your software? Most of the errors you report are for things like this, or with devices that have been jailbroken, or a computer used to jailbreak devices in the past.

3014 & 3194 often refer to the device not being eligible for the iOS, or previous attempts to perform unauthorized modifications, either of that specific device or that the computer you're using has been used to make unauthorized modifications on other iOS devices.

What jailbreak were you running on this iPhone previously?

Hello, and thankyou all who tried to help me resolve this... after 8+ hours of going round in circles I have finally solved the issue. In the end it was a combo of uninstalling my 3rd party firewall and a different USB... I have a variety of USB ports on my PC and it turned out I was not using a USB 3.0 compatible port to connect the iPhone to the computer. FFS!

    Thanks again.

***if anyone is reading this for solution to a similar problem, see above, uninstall 3rd party firewall, make sure the device is plugged into a USB 3.0 port and that you've unplugged all other USB peripherals.***
