ipad air 2 wont charge via USB on laptop

So i have just received a brand new ipad air 2. it will not charge on either my desktop or laptop..total BS. my laptop has two 3.0 usb ports

and the pc has 4 2.0 ports. the laptop is a sony vaio i7 core 17" and a year old, the desktop is a acer mid size tower and is also a year old.

i have read that either pc needs at least a 2.0 usb port. so why won't it charge if my laptop exceeds that??? any idea's

I guess i over looked one feature. had i known, i wouldn't have just paid over 830.00 for it.

I need to keep data connectivity with my laptop to expand though It's hotspot which allows 8 additional connections beyond the 5 iPad gives In its hotspot.

This fixes the charging issue and it's a cool thing to have regardless.

A work around is achieved by the addition of a powered usb hub. I found this one with a simple google search. $39.99 but I'm sure you could find one for a lot less. This gives the iPad it's required amps of 2.1mAh

Anker | 7-Port USB 3.0 Data Hub

Generally, laptop USB ports do not deliver sufficient voltage to charge an iPad. I could not be sure why the desktop cannot seem to charge it, however the other question is, does the desktop and/or laptop recognize the device? When you first connect the device, it takes a couple of minutes for the correct drivers to load for the device to be recognized. Once that happens, it should begin to charge. Do you have iTunes installed on the desktop? If not, you will need to install it for the correct drivers to be placed on the desktop for it to recognize the iPad.

I have itunes. i have no issue setting up the ipad. it just ***** that only the 110V chargers it the only way to properly charge..

not a good thing. with all the technology apple has, you think they can have a inverter style charger or something..

why have a portable unit if you can really charge it portable..oh well, a waste of 830.00. my fault for not looking at every single

pro and con i guess. anyone want to buy it? so i can go get a surface pro

Better check the charging requirements for the Surface before throwing the iPad in the trash. If it has decent battery life, it will have a larger battery..... If it has a larger battery, it will require more current to charge it..... If it requires more current to charge it, it will require a higher power charger. And there you are, right back where you started.

I never said you had issue with setting up the iPad. You never indicated if the device was recognized by the laptop and/or the desktop. If Windows is not recognizing the device, that would explain why it is not charging. The device will not charge if Windows does not accept the device being plugged into the USB port. Do you hear an indication sound that the device is being plugged into the USB port.

And the surface Pro, is a portable device, are you going to plug that into your computer? That would look a little strange having two screens and two keyboards right there together. And there is no guarantee it will be recognized and charge either.

I'd buy your iPad if you're selling it at 50% discount :-)

The charger is dual voltage (110 and 220 volt). Btw, the charger is portable and umm... I don't know about you but I think the iPad charger is a heck of a lot smaller than your laptop. Given the 2 options, I'd take iPad charger with me instead of my laptop.

You want to buy a Surface Pro so you can bring your laptop to charge the tablet? (assuming that you can use your laptop to charge the Surface Pro) That's very interesting.

Old post, I know, but I had to laugh when you wrote "..oh well, a waste of 830.00. anyone want to buy it? so i can go get a surface pro". Yes, your new iPad is a "complete waste", all because you can't charge it from your laptop. Do you realize you can charge it directly from the outlet, like your laptop? By the way, MY laptop charges MY iPad fine. Man, you seriously want to charge your iPad form the laptop, don't you. What kind of life do you have, that a tablet is a complete waste, all because of that minor thing? Talk about "First World Problems".
