12" G4 PowerBook & External Display Resolutions

Hello all,
I have a 12" G4 PowerBook (1.5Gz) with 64Mb of nVidia Video RAM pre installed, and am looking to use an external display to extend the viewable desktop for design work.

The max resolution on the laptops own screen is 1024 x 768, but will I be limited to this on the external display?

If anyone knows the answer or could even recommend a model of display I'd really apprecaiate it.

Thanks
G

Hi,

you will not be limited on an external display! Run your PowerBook in Dual-Display mode, you can then setup the external screen resolution to nearly anything you want!

To switch between mirrored and secondary display mode you can use the F7 key (i am not sure at the moment which F number, but the one that displays a small screen symbol!).

Come back if you have any further questions!

Hi,

I own a 20" Apple Cinema Display which I sometimes connect to my PowerBook but mainly use with my G4. I can recommend that one.

But there other good screens available. If you need correct colors you might also use EIZOs for example, which are even more expensive than Apple Cinema displays.

Make sure the display you buy has a DVI in, which brings much better colors and images than VGA in. If you have options, please call back and I may help you further!

I have a huge old-school apple CRT display (with the old style connector, I had to make an adaptor) which I run off my PowerBook at 1600x1200. I'm thinking of moving to a flatscreen - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/tech-data/B000CCB0OG/ref=dpnav0/026-1657227-2076405?ie=UTF8&n=560798&s=electronics

The thing is, it runs at 1440 x 900 (a step down, but I'm on a budget). It's a slighly obscure widescreen resolution.

My system prefs don't mention that resolution in the (large) list I can choose from. I notice that one reviewer on amazon says he's used it with his powerbook, but I'm still not sure about buying something that my mac won't support the resolution of.

Have people had experience of this? Can the mac discover what resolution it should be running at? Will I be unable to make full use of the screen?

Many thanks

Joe

Been to the shops now and just bought a Samsung SyncMaster 205BW 20" Widescreen Monitor....and it is lovely.

If anyone is thinking of getting one I'd recomend it...though I have only had it on for the past three hours, but so far so good.

1680 x 1050 resolution, and a doddle to get up and running. Just dandy.

Thanks for all those that posted and put my mind at rest.
