2009 Macbook black screen during boot

Ok so im having a really weird issue. My 2009 macbook chimes when power button is pressed yet the screen stays black, after some seconds the screen comes alive at the os desktop. This means the apple screen never shows and if i need to access boot options i am unable to as the screen is black until the os loads.
