Q: Track pad has a "dead spot" - can it be fixed?

I have a Mac Air.  The track pad is very erratic.  When I tap a particular area, nothing happens....I have to search for a place on the the track pad in order to place the cursor.  Also, when I use two fingers to scroll, I get a drop down menu and I have to tap track pad to remove it....but the slightest two finger touch and it returns.  Very frustrating.  Anyone have and ideas?
