Trying to sign up to iCloud beta via web with my usual Apple ID. I'm not getting the email verification code. I've of couse tried to "send a new code", restart the browser, try different broswers, to no avail.

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are not receiving the verification email. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
