Segmentation fault: 11 After updating to Yosemite

com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.FolderActions.enabled[31433]) Service exited due to signal: Segmentation fault: 11

Hi there.

I keep getting these messages in my console log. Thousands of them. I'm just after updating Mountain lion to Yosemite and find the applications are

very sluggish and wonder if this is the culprit.

I have tried tired a few solutions thinking the problem might be from a past user uid being looked for but i followed this post to fix that

I repaired Disk Utility permissions, restarted in Safe mode (same problem) and single user mode which stopped the logs from continuously updating (i just have to press the reload button). I used Onyx to clear out the cash files. Basically I am at a loss as to what xpc is trying to launch

bar a clean install have you guys any advice?

Bit of a newbie here so if there are extra detail I can add please ask.

XPC services are very low-level software. You won't be able to extract any meaningful information that way. Most likely, you just have a bunch of old software that is incompatible with Yosemite - you and about 15 million of your best friends 🙂.

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

Since this seems to be related to Folder Actions, maybe you should review what Folder Actions you have enabled:

And yes, Please post the EtreCheck output. It has been a very helpful tool in the forums (if you were to search for "EtreCheck" you would find thousands of hits, as it is used that much in the forums.

I thought about that, but there could be 3rd party tools that use folder actions. I think some online backup tools do that.

So yes, review those Folder Actions because EtreCheck doesn't report that very well (if at all). Just don't make any changes right away. Let's see what is going on first.

I disabled folder actions and that particular error stops. The only problem as it is replaced with hundreds of this error

Brilliant! You have found the problem. Uninstall Trusteer Rapport and you should be fine.

Curious as to how you arrived at that conclusion from the report. I'm seeing a similar issue. Here's the console message I was getting:

The original error indicates a folder action, so it was suggested asluckwouldhaveit disable the folder action.

After doing that, it was discovered there were lots of console errors mentioning 'rooksd'. A Google search of 'rooksd' turns up the Trusteer / Rapport software from IBM.

You do not have Trusteer / Rapport from IBM install, so your folder actions must be from a different source. But you too can start up disabling the offending folder actions. Looking at the folder actions may even tell what put those folder actions in place.

If that does not resolve the problem, you should start your own new post, as you do not have the same Trusteer / Rapport from IBM problem as asluckwouldhavet.

Ah, thanks! For some reason it didn't occur to me that rooksd was a process name. I'm not so lucky as my crasher appears to be Finder. I didn't have any folder actions listed when I looked in there, and in com.apple.FolderActions.folders.plist, there was only one listed (Dropbox related). I deleted that, but it didn't seem to help. For now, I'm just going to leave Folder Actions disabled and maybe deal with it some other time. At that point, I'll start a new thread.

running, which is a similar service to Dropbox. Is it possible that is trying to interact with the finder.

You should also try booting in Safe Mode to see if any of the 3rd party additions are interfering with the Finder
