Mac mini 2012 new OWC SSD install issue

Hoping someone can makes sense of this report.

My macmini 2012 has been rock stable. 8 gig, Yosemite install.

Yesterday I installed an 120GB Electra 6G SSD as a second drive. Installed a fresh install of Yosemite. Everythign went without a hitch. System ran for 24 hours with non problems. Began installing my software and twice I came back to find the mini had rebooted under the original hard rive/system with a message that the computer had shutdown due to a hardware issue.

Checking Disk Utility the OWC SDD doesnt' even come up.

Rebooting it show shows up again, I can then select it as the start up drive and reboot with the SDD. Everything seems fine. Then a repeat several hours later.

This is the last report. Can someone translate? I don't know if I have a bad SDD, if it's a comptability/OS issue or if I possibly knocked something loose when reassembling. Thanks.

Here are some possibilities and solutions.

SATA cable may not be compatible with the drive. Some 3rd party SATA cables won't work with some SSDs in a Mini.

Is the OWC SSD connected to a SATA cable from OWC or another 3rd party vendor? If it's from OWC, then something else may be wrong.

Have you tried swapping the drives in your Mini so that the OWC drive is connected to the Apple supplied SATA cable?

Are you using any 3rd party TRIM enablers with the SSD? If so turn it off. OWC drives use the SandForce controller and do not need TRIM enablers.

What is your basis that a 6 GB/sec SSD will not work in the lower bay of a 2011 Mini?

your Mac mini is a 5,1 and that 6G/s SSD in the bottom data spot is not going to work. 2012 mac mini a 6,2 would. Just place a one terabyte hard drive or a 3 G/sec SSD in the bottom data spot.

I have used a 6 GB/sec SSD in my Mac Mini 3.1 w/o problems. I only get a negotiated spped of 3 GB/sec though.

thanks the replies. OWC sold me the kit, cable etc based on the Macmini's specs. I talked with support and the drive I installed should work with no issues.

They did have me reset the PRAM which did. They also told me I might need to install Yosemite 'several times before is sticks' - whatever that means. lol.

Anyway I zapped the PRAM. So far no mysterious restarts with the drive being unrecognized.

One thing I didn't mention though...

MacMini is in a backyard home office (about a 100 feet away with buried CAT6 cable connecting it to the network). I was using Screen Share from my MBP reinstall all my work software. Every crash occurred while using screenshare. I never had any crashes when I was actually sitting at the computer.

I don't know if that has anything to do with it - but I haven't used ScreenShare for any length of time to control the Mac mini since the pram zap. Figured I'll use the computer for a week or so and see how stable it is and then try using screenshare again and see if the behavior repeats itself.

Meanwhile I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I'm just suspect that it was a PRAM issue. But I'm a layman. 😉

Be careful. You will void your warranty if you do anything other than replace the RAM yourself.

I had an authorized Apple Service center install an OWC 240 6G SSD in a new 2012 Mac Mini Server 2.3 i7Quad Core, 6,2. It's been nothing but trouble. Apple Store has done two reformats and reinstalls of Yosemite and every diagnostic in their arsenal. The Mini still stalls, restarts on it's own and generates kernel panics.

The Apple Store told me that if I'd installed the drive myself the warranty would be void and they couldn't help me.
