slow mac!!

Hello everyone, I have two issues that I'm hoping someone will help me with!! First my screensaver keeps on changing itself from the folder that I chose to some preloaded pictures that already came with the Mac. Second this thing is running so slow lately that doing just about anything takes for ever!! Now I do understand that it is basically a dinosaur in the world on computers but still!!! Hope someone can suggest something to fix both issues!!! Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Some diagnostics, to begin what could be a long process.

How full is the hard drive? To get that info, hold the control key down and click the hard drive icon. Select Get info.

The key numbers are Capacity: and Available:

Post back please and let's see if those numbers tell us anything.

As for the screen saver issue, try a PRAM reset:

  1. 1 Shut down your Mac.
  2. 2 Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (), Option, P, and R.
  3. 3 Turn on your Mac.
  4. 4 Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
  5. 5 Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.

Release the keys.

It is not difficult to add RAM to your iMac. Apple has provided clear directions:

iMac: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support

I personally buy RAM from this vendor. They provide a lifetime warranty on the RAM, and the prices are competitive.

http://www.macramdirect.com

(This is not the company that is often mentioned here. It is a company I have used for a decade, that I trust. I have no financial or other interest in Ram Direct.)

Mar 2, 2015 12:01 PM in response to Eustace Mendis

hello again, I wanna thank you for your help once again!! I finally got some RAM for my computer and I gotta say I immediately noticed a huge improvement in its speed and performance!! But I was wondering if there is anything else that I could do to improve its performance!!! I also wanted to ask you a question because I don't know if you remember but one of the issues I had was that my screen saver was constantly changing itself to a different folder so I think the PRAM reset we did before didn't do the trick!!! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

Mar 2, 2015 12:11 PM in response to marcin7311

You could try this.

Go to your home folder and open the folder called Library. Inside that folder you will find a folder called Preferences. In there look for a file called: com.apple.screensaver.plist

Trash that folder, restart the computer and reset the Screen Saver in the usual way. (Apple menu / System Preferences / Desktop and Screen Saver).

slow mac!!
