Experiencing slow MacBook Pro

Question: I am experiencing some serious slow downs with my MacBook Pro (13" 2010). I ran the disk utility and it states that the problem can't be repaired. It recommends reformatting. If I restore from TimeMachine, won't I restore the problem?

Thanks,

Andrew from NS.

You definitely need to get rid of the antivirus. That isn't helping.

The bad news is that Yosemite isn't going to run well on that machine. It wants at least 8 GB RAM and prefers and SSD. The good news is that you seem to be running on your original hard drive anyway. That thing is way overdue for replacement and SSDs are quite inexpensive now. Your machine can take up to 8 GB RAM. I suggest going to OWC (http://www.macsales.com) and purchasing more RAM and an SSD. It will be like getting a brand new machine.

You are correct to be worried about restoring problems though. Make sure to remove the antivirus first and backup. Then add the RAM and SSD. Never try to delete files manually. Never use an "app zapper". Only use a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. If you can't find those, we can help.

I ran the disk utility and it states that the problem can't be repaired.

First, that model is perfectly capable of running Yosemite with good performance.

Live verification of the startup volume is unreliable.

Start up in Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name), and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then restart as usual.

If you don't already have a current backup, you must back up your data before you take the above step. You may be able to back up, even if the system isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Directory corruption in a MacOS journaled volume is always the result of a drive malfunction. It's not caused by power failures, system crashes, or anything else. You might choose to tolerate such a malfunction once in the life of a drive. If it's repeated, the drive must be replaced, or there is some other hardware fault that needs to be corrected. Ignoring repeated directory errors will result in data loss.

I didn't mention this before, but I guess I need to. Anyone with any real experience with notebook computers knows that 2.5" hard drives tend to fail after 3 years of use. Maybe they will die sooner. Maybe they will die later. But they most certainly will die. You seem to be on year 5. Even if Yosemite were perfectly capable of running Yosemite with good performance on your machine, you should still be shopping for your 3rd hard drive at this point. There is no quicker, easier, or cheaper maintenance you do than a hard drive replacement. You always get a bigger and faster hard drive. These days, you can even get an SSD for a very reasonable price. And as long as your are cracking open the case for a new hard drive, it makes zero sense not to upgrade your RAM at the same time.

Anyone who tries to tell you that such an upgrade is not a good idea is not acting in your best interests.
