How do I update firmware for mid 2011 21.5"?

I tried the directions and the link to download it on the Apple support pages, but when I tried to download it said my system wasn't supported. In the requirements it said I need Lion. However I just bought this used. It came with Mavericks and I updated to Yosemite. So I don't have Lion but I am having a problem with the fan on the computer that I am pretty sure is because of the firmware because I already tried everything else and the firmware is way behind (and if it's not the firmware then well I'm at a loss about the noisy fan).

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

It's not getting hot at all. When it wakes from sleep it is quiet, then the fan gets gradually louder and louder and it doesn't get quieter ever, ever when I quit all the applications. It seems like it's just running with no regulation. I have a feeling it has something to do with the heat sensor and I'll eventually have to open it up to fix the problem, but I would like to try all other options first. And I figure it's probably good to update the firmware anyway whether it's the cause of the problem or not.
