Arpeggiator function?

Hi,

I'm using Garageband 2.0.6 on iOS 8.1.3.

May I check, with regards to the arpeggiator function, I am given five choices for the "note order", one of which is "as played" - what does "as played" actually mean?

Is it also possible to customize the arpeggiator, like dictate what notes to play and be able to transpose it to other chords when I change the chord progression accordingly?

Thanks in advance

Lou

Have you seen the "Help" page?

Play arpeggios automatically

The Keyboard Touch Instrument includes an arpeggiator. When you turn on the arpeggiator, chords you play on the keyboard are arpeggiated, or played one note at a time rather than simultaneously.

  • Tap the Arpeggiator button User uploaded file, then tap the Run switch. When you turn on the arpeggiator, other controls appear below the Run switch, letting you set the direction, note value, and range of arpeggiated notes.
  • User uploaded file
  • Tap Note Order, then choose the direction of arpeggiated notes.
  • Tap Note Rate, then choose a note value for arpeggiated notes, based on the tempo of the song.
  • Tap Octave Range, then choose how many octaves the arpeggio covers.
  • To close the Arpeggiator controls, tap Done.

To transpose:

When the arpeggiator is turned on, the Sustain control becomes a Latch control. If you touch and hold or lock the Latch control, the current arpeggio keeps playing. Tapping a different key transposes the current arpeggio to start on the tapped note.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yes I've seen the help page, including the section posted above. However the page does not answer my question - it didn't define what does "As played" mean, neither did it teach how to customize arpeggiators.

In any case, I've just figured out how to customize the sequence - just hold the notes and play in order, if "as played" is selected the order of notes will keep repeating.

May I check though:

1) Is there any way to create sequence where the starting two notes are identical - it appears that Garageband only detects the pattern if I hold the note and press a second one - which will mean I'm not able to have two starting identical notes in the pattern since i will then need to "unhold" the note so that I can depress the note again.

2) I realizes that the pattern will be transposed accordingly when I depress another note. Is there any way though that the Garageband is able to play the "minor" version of a "Major" arpeggio, for example.

I'm guessing the answers to the above are "no" but would just want to confirm with people who have had experience in Garageband. Apologies if the answer is obvious - I'm not able to find much resources on iOS Garageband on the net.

I'm no expert in this, but the as played means the order is taken from the order in which you touch the keys. Only one note is played at a time from the current actively pressed keys (plus bonus notes if Octave Range >1). You can simulate pressing the same key twice by enabling the dual keyboard layout and scrolling the same octaves into view on both keyboards. Whether that satisfies 1) I cannot say.

2) exceeds my limited musical knowledge 😊 however you may be able to get a sound you are listening for by working with the scale control.
