Q: Reminder app for Mountain Lion to replace Calendar?

I've been relying on Calendar for years to get emails every day, whenever I want them, etc. So far, it's looking like my new Calendar has a particular way it likes to do things that isn't conducive to my needs. In particular I can't seem to set up default alerts the way I used to. And I have to jump through more hoops.

Is there a good replacement that might allow me to get what I want?***

*** Okay, I'll give you a typical use for me...

Dental appointment on July 9 at 10:30. So I create an entry on that day. I set the email reminder to maybe 3 days before at whatever time of day I want. Frequently it's not important so I make sure it's morning or evening as desired. Then On July 6, at the correct time, I get my reminder.

Another use is watering the trees. I set up an email to repeat maybe every 13 days. Time of day is irrelevant.

Thanks for your help!

correction: "Frequently it's not important" referring to the time of day.

    Another important example:

I want to have an email right Now. I can set it to today but it still wants to send it the day before. So I change it to "same day". But it still wants to be at 9:00 am even though it's 10:00 at night. So I must set the time to some time after 10pm. Any short cuts for that? Or again, another app that will do it?

...Edit: Does anyone know why I have an option to edit this post, but not my previous one that this is responding to?
