My screen goes black shortly after turning on. Why?

I turn on my computer and within 1 min. the screen goes black. Sometimes it goes to sleep. Sometimes I have to hit the power button. Sometimes I have to hit multiple buttons, multiple times. What is happening? My screen saver is set for 10 mins. No one else uses my computer in my home.
