Q: Not able to download CD music to 5s....

I have a very good friend in a rural/remote area who looks to me as the person he knows who can fix any Apple product issue (I can't!). So I'm driving 150 miles to attempt to fix his iPhone problem which is this:

He's got an iPhone 5s. This phone has no problem in downloading music purchased from iTunes onto it. He cal also transfer that music to his wife's iPhone. But he's got an extensive blues CD collection and wants to download tunes from those CDs to the iPhone. Even when he puts the music into iTunes first, the iPhone won't accept the non-iTunes-purchased music. His wife's iPhone will not allow music from CDs, either. My sense is that there's just a box not checked or a button not selected, but I'm not sure.

Anyone out there that might have an answer "For Dummies" easy enough for me to understand and fix for him?

Thanks for any help.

I suspect that it is a setting in iTunes. If he rips the music to the iTunes library, it should sync just fine, so long as you have iTunes set to sync music. If it is set to sync all music in iTunes, it should sync all, or all checked music. The checked box is in the Summary page once you select the phone in iTunes. The other selections are on the Music tab once you select the device in iTunes. There should not be a problem syncing so long as the music is added to the iTunes library. So now I am at my friends place with his new PC laptop and his iPhone 5s.

I moved the setting in the Music Sync preferences on the iPhone to Sync Entire Library. As a result, it erased everything and then downloaded some of the music he wasn't able to transfer over, but most of the other music from his PC iTunes library is no longer on the iPhone, nor is it on his PC laptop. I am assuming instead of syncing the music from the PC laptop to the iPhone, it did the opposite, put the iPhone's music on the laptop. Th confusing part is that some of the music that previously wouldn't move over to the iPhone is on the device, while some of the music on the laptop still won't transfer over.

Again, when I attempt to drag and drop from the PC iTunes music playlist library to the iPhone's music library, it doesn't activate and won't transfer. Not sure what Preferences actually need to be checked that aren't so music transfer can be dragged from the PC laptop music library to the iPhone music library.

    Anyone?

I'm not sure, but syncing a phone to the iTunes on the computer will not remove music from the iTunes library. It cannot do the opposite as you stated. Is it possible there is music that is from multiple Apple IDs? Next, you can either sync music, or you can manually manage music (drag and drop). Once the phone is connected to the computer and iTunes, on the Summary page, you can set the checkmark by Manually Manage Music. That will prompt iTunes to remove all music from the phone, and then you can manually manage music. This support document should help with manually managing music.
