Kiosk Mode : can not log out

Recently unable to use Apple Menu and power button to directly log out, turn off or restart.

Currently I have to switch to separate Log In Window, type in Admin credentials to do the same.

Also, Terminal reboot works.

What preferences do I need to alter to get this fixed?

Did you ever find a solution? I'm having this exact problem on the latest version of OS X (10.10.3) on my 2014 MBA

I solved this shortly after the post, but forgot to make a follow up here.

Since your machine is portable, if in any doubt, try the Geniuses.

The problem was very vexing. Vaguely, this is my recollection, so I will not recommend everyone to try what follows below.😝

  1. Newly created user did not solve the issue; thus the issue was not corruption of the User files.
  2. CCC Clone copying of /System nor /Library (from backups) was not effective.
  3. Doing combo update did not make any difference. Re-installation of the 10.10. amazingly did not help either. (At the end of each installation, the computer could not shut down /restart by itself; nor would the problem go away after the apparent installation. )

Since I did not want to wipe the disk (takes too much time plus was the wrong way logically) I figured it must be something to do with the rest of the hidden files, so I went into the /private/var folder and moved folders and files I made from cloned backups, looking carefully at the dates (before and after when the problems started - basically researching what the files are, and only them moving the likely ones). (/bin and /sbin files had no changes)

Some iterations and combination later, I managed to cleared problem.

Unfortunately, it was very late and the work log became misplaced so I can not tell you exactly which file or folder was the culprit 😢

After the repair was successful and a period of few days to make sure all was ok, the clone copy was updated, thereby the date log for the moves was overwritten and lost. Since then 10.10.2, and 10.10.3 was also applied with no re occurrence of the problem.
