OS X cannot be installed on 'time machine backups'

I am trying to upgrade from 10.6.8 to OS X Mavericks and keep getting stopped with the message "OS X cannot be installed on Time Machine Backups" and there is no other drive showing available.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
