I hike local trails. I take iPhone 6 pictures of trail problems and then report them to appropriate agency for resolution. How can I get the (GPS) coordinates to display in iPhoto 9?
I exported 1 photo as a JPG and opened it in Preview. The the inspector showed the coordinates but this is a bit round-about.

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.
iPhoto only shows locations on a map - not EXIF coordinates - Aperture- the more expensive professions relative to iPhoto - does show the numeric coordinates

Here's a way to view the GPS data in numerical format in photos in your library:
1 - download, install and launch the free EXIF Viewer for Mac OS X.
2 - drag the thumbnail of the picture you want to view the GPS coordinated from the iPhoto window onto the EXIF Viewer icon in the dock.
3 - look for the coordinates in the resulting window.

when iPhoto is running the top menu bar has Apple menu - ten the iphoto menu - then the file menu

A _slightly_ faster way than your original method is:
Select photo in iPhoto
(menu) File > Reveal in Finder (Original)
Finder will open a new window with the file already selected.
Double-click that file to open the image in Preview.
Then view the Inspector in Preview.
This saves you the step of exporting the photo.
