My computer becomes extremely slow when I watch a video online

Hello,

I have been having this problem since last night and am not sure how to fix it.

I have a MacBook from mid 2010 with version 10.6.8, Processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and Memory 4GB 1067 DDR3.

My computer works perfectly fine when I browse the Internet with Google Chrome, or when I use Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc...

I have had problems with the % of CPU in the past (my laptop would start making noise and get quite hot), but I am not experiencing any of this at the moment.

However, as soon as I start watching Netflix, Youtube, or Skype, my computer dramatically slows down (even my tracker won't follow, the first time I experienced this problem I thought my touchpad was broken).

I erased my Chrome history as I hadn't done it since a long time, I deleted all the apps I did not need, I checked that I had not downloaded MacKeeper and I also ran a etrecheck 'scan'). - and I have 17% of my HDD free, and my battery is not broken.

I kept searching answers on the internet and thought my graphic card might be broken? But I haven't had experiences of 'lines' on my screen whatsoever, the only problem seems to be coming from my computer 'lagging'.

Lastly, my internet connection is fast, my housemates are able to watch movies on their laptops and everything is working just fine.

I hope someone can help me with this as I am thinking this problem does not seem to be unresolvable from my home and taking my laptop to applecare would be quite a waste of time if i can fix the issue myself. Thank you!!!

Hey kaz-k, thanks for the reply. I just reset the SMC but it didn't solve my problem. Are there updates to do with Java? Videos that I watch through facebook will dramatically slow my computer down (once again, the entire computer slows down, not just the video so it's not a internet connection + I tried to watch the same video with another macbook and it didn't had any of those problems.

Any other ideas of what could be causing this?

Feb 19, 2015 1:04 PM in response to gaby_123

Can anyone help me please?? The problem has not gone away and I don't really have time to give my computer for a couple of days to the Mac Support team :// (Also it does not feel like my computer is broken: like I said, everything works perfectly fine; but my computer starts slowing down 20seconds after I start streaming) 😢 help

There is no solution via upgrade, to the problem your computer has.

Avoid the temptation and avoid the headache. Some older Macs do not

like Yosemite and that may also require you to buy or upgrade to later apps.

The newer applications + their functions in several instances, are different, too.

To add a fully new OS X on top of your user account & old system issues,

would be a bigger problem with no visible means to fix it. Layered trouble.

Had you looked into the Activity Monitor while other items were running to see

what is using the limited resource of the computer? Since online streaming

does use more hardware-based resources (RAM, and HDD write/read cycles)

that may be something to look into. While the RAM is upgradable to more via

use of greater capacity memory chips in the correct specification, there may

be something else causing the slowness. A bulky totally new OS X won't fix it.

Did you see if OS X Utilities and Disk Utility (run from Recovery) could help

discover if there is a problem in the hard disk drive, or if the hardware test

sees any issue? You could repair disk and also repair disk permissions.

Do you allow the video to fully load before running it in the computer?

Does your browser also support HTML5 video? That may run some

content with less trouble, than using Flash player.

The Console utility's log files have a huge amount of information, and this

is where some of your answers hide in plain sight; if one could understand

what they are saying. Crash logs, and incidental items by time & date. When

you note an issue or problem, try & locate the Console log of that incident.

Also, you could run some of the extensive tests and methods to expose

the system logs and reports such as those suggested by Linc. He may see

your thread & reply; or you could look into where he has already posted a

method of showing how to start a test and how that helped a different user.

However without knowing more about the command line or console, or

terminal utilities, the performance guide from http://thesafemac.com may

be a place to read to see if you can relate to the suggestions there.

Good luck, in any event... 😐
