Q: Yosemite partition issues (greyed options)

Running:

clip1.jpg

Hard disk: 3TB Fusion drive

I recently upgraded to YOSEMITE and then after decided it would be useful to add WINDOWS 8 on bootcamp for various reasons.

What I did:

  1. Partition my 3TB Fusion drive to 2.68TB YOSEMITE / 318 MB WINDOWS
  2. Format the new WINDOWS partition in NTFS (using paragon software)

Result:

  1. My new partition seems to have formatted (itself) to Mac OS journaled (how/why?)
  2. Now all options to resize or delete partitions are grey out. I can't change anything

What have I tired:

  1. Booting into disk utility (command-R) to access the drives, but all options are still greyed out
  2. Tried reverting the disk as per some threads, but have failed (please see disk info below)

Haven't yet tried boot to an external Mac OS build to attempt to change/influence the partitions as I have read a thread that didn't yield results with this giving a sort of checksum error. I'm at a loss, any advice would be gratefully welcomed!

If you want to delete the WIN-HD Logical Volume Group (LVG) you need to open Terminal and issue the following command using the LVG's UUID which is the string of letters/numbers/dashes above the Name:   WIN-HD line in your screenshot. This will delete that LVG and should result in free space that you can add back into your Fusion Drive. Is this what you're trying to do?

With a Fusion Drive you can ONLY add 1 additional partition outside of the Fusion drive which is what you currently have.

Can I add a partition to the hard disk with Fusion Drive?

Using Disk Utility, you can add one partition to the hard disk on Fusion Drive. Once you add the partition, the "plus" symbol in Disk Utility to add additional partitions will be grayed out. You cannot partition the Flash storage.

If I create a hard disk partition is it part of Fusion Drive?

The additional partition is not part of Fusion Drive. The new partition is a separate volume that is physically located on the hard disk drive.

Thx keg55, this helped me to remove the the unwanted partition in Mac OS Journaled format.

My objective is to create a partition that I can then bootcamp a copy of Windows to.

I retried creating a Windows partition with NTFS (which is needed by windows to install through bootcamp) and I get an error message along the lines that the Fusion drive does not support this (NTFS) file system, it then changes the partition to Mac OS Journaled format.

? Do you think that it that I should create a FAT32 partition (instead of NTFS) for this purpose ? Then install Windows 8 through bootcamp..

Look at that link I provided you and read the following within. There are a couple of links in there you may want to click on.

Can I add a Windows partition?

You can create one additional partition on the hard disk with Fusion Drive. You can create either a Mac OS X partition or a Windows partition. If creating a Windows partition, use Boot Camp Assistant to create it, not Disk Utility. From the Go menu, choose Utilities. Then, double-click Boot Camp Assistant and follow the onscreen instructions. For more information on Boot Camp see the Boot Camp support page.

Note: Boot Camp Assistant in OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 and earlier does not support 3TB hard drive configurations.

Dear Keg55, thanks! I've now achieved what I was attempting, by partitioning through Bootcamp and not doing it myself through Disk Utility. Your advice on deleting the unwanted partition once the options were greyed out was also invaluable. Many Thanks!!
