show chapters on quicktime 10.4

When using my previous version of Quicktime (10.1 on MacBook pro), I could see my chapters listed on a drop down menu right there on the video screen when reviewing a recorded skype call.

Now, I'm using my new Macbook Air and a newer version of quicktime (10.4), and there is no drop down list of my chapters. 😟

The previous version of QT offered "show chapters/hide chapters" under VIEW.

Now it only offers "go to next chapter/go to previous chapter"

That's really not the same at all. I need to see the entire list of chapters, with the names I gave them.

Any pointers anyone as to how I can see my chapters list ?

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Perhaps we aren't using the same version of Yosemite or QT.

Using Yosemite OS X v10.10.2 for tests. I use both QT X and QT 7 under Yosemite but previously posted images were captured using QT X v10.4 since you indicated that was the player you were using. Properly chaptered content should support a chapter menu icon option.

I contacted Ecamm this morning, and the tech support folks there told me that Apple has changed/removed some of the interface features on QT, and he sees exactly the same thing I do (go to next chapter/go to previous chapter, but no icon or chapter list).

This was clearly not the first time he'd been asked this question. His solution worked for me: download QT 7, which I did, and now I can use it to view my vids.

I find it odd that Apple would remove such a useful feature, but whatever. It's all good.

It is more likely that your files do not conform to current QT X chaptering requirements. I'm not a Skype user so I don't know what kind of data is stored as content. For instance. if the Skype files are audio only, then they would not be compatible with the QT X v10.4 player chapter menus because it currently appears to only support chapter text tracks that are linked to a video track. (I.e., I have the same problem as you when playing M4B audiobooks and use the same solution—playback in the QT 7 player.) As previously indicated, QT X v10.4 still supports chapter menus for normal video content as demonstrated by my previous screen captures. Not sure if the current problem is a bug or a change in QT X v10.4 player programming. In either case, my suggestion would be to file a QT Feedback report as a bug report or enhancement request to allow use of chapters in the same manner as previous players. If enough people file such feedback reports and/or formal developer "Bug Reports," then Apple may consider fixing the problem.

However, not when I use the 10.4 on my new computer.

If I had this problem, I would create a pristine Yosemite boot-up drive on a spare external drive for the MacBook Pro and re-test. (Unfortunately, I don't know if you have a spare external drive or if your MacBook Pro is Yosemite compatible.) Basically, QT X v10.4 does support chapter menus for properly chaptered content, so if you cannot access the chapter menus, then your content, your QT X player, or your Yosemite OS is corrupted and you need to determine where the problem lies. Since you say the content is good, that only leaves the player or system to be checked.

Not me. That's the problem. The icon/dropdown isn't there.

Once again, does the file actually contain a a Text (Chapter) track? Here is what a file looks like in the QT X v10.4 player when no chapter or alternate audio tracks are present:

If no chapter track is present, then that might explain why you don't have the "Chapter" icon in the controller. On the other hand, if a chapter track is present, then it might indicate the player app or system is corrupted and needs to be re-installed.

I created the chapters using the chapter markers feature in skype exactly as I had always done before. The only thing different is my version of Quicktime.

I even transported the movie file to my old machine to see if my chapter data existed as you suggest. It does. I can see the chapter icon and the dropdown when I use the QT 10.1. However, not when I use the 10.4 on my new computer. 😟
