Q: Yosemite - How to use calendar

I just bought this 27" iMac and trying to use the calendar and can't find out HOW without  using that contact thing, which I have no use for.  Can that be done like on the old calendar I used in 10.6.8?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), Printers - Lexmark 901 and Canon IP 6700D0 External harddrive

Sorry, I will have to admit, I didn't read this whole article word for word because most of it was about things I am not interested in.  All I want to do is put in birthdays and anniversaries.  All I could find about birthdays is that it gets this information from Contacts.  And that is NOT what I want to do. So, I am to assume that what I want to do, can't be done.  If there is better information somewhere, please let me know.   OR  -   If someone knows about a good calendar app that I could buy, please let me know,

All you need to do is open the contact, click the birthday date and select Show this date in Calendar! Calendar is a great app, please learn to use it and if you still are stuck go speak to a Genius (free consultation) or call AppleCare.

Creating birthday reminders in Calendar is very simple. You do not need to use the Contacts app.

Create an event with the name of the person whose birthday it is. Example: John Doe's Birthday. Set it as an all-day event and set it to repeat yearly. Your done!

Thanks Gino. I have been trying to do that, but don't know how to put the name of the person in.  I have tried to follow the directions,  but I must be doing something wrong somewhere.  Have had Apple computers since 1980, but this Yosemite is something else.  Thanks for your help.

When you create any kind of event in the Calendar the very first thing it asks you to fill-in is the event name, that would be the person’s name for a birthday event. If you have created an event that does not have a name it will default to “New Event.” To change it just double-click on the event to edit it and then just change “New Event” to the name of the person.
