i fitted new battery but it won't charge. when plugged into wall socket gets to itunes setup but no further. when connected to computer not enough battery to turn on to get into setup. Any ideas please?

Where did you get the battery from? If not from Apple then it was likely a cheap knockoff or from a stolen or salvage phone because Apple does not sell parts. It also means Apple will no longer service your phone. If the battery was replaced by Apple then take it back and tell them about the issue.

It sounds very very much like the battery. You will need to have it replaced. If you put the failing one in yourself you will need to pay as your Warranty is now void.

Rats. i bought from amazon uk. thanks for info.
I ordered another battery but NOT from amazon. this one had sufficient power to allow the 15 minute restore of OS and firmware. IOS 6.1.6 via iTunes.
so whoopee for that.
