Dell U2414H Monitor - RGB COLOR ISSUE [SOLVED!] - The EASY way!

This specifically refers to the Dell U2414H monitor being sent the wrong color space (YPbPr instead of RGB). This is your fix.

It's a commonly posted about topic that Apple (whether they will admit it to you or not) is blocking the sending of the RGB color space to many non-Apple monitors....which is a bunch of malarkey. Yet, if you call them about it, you'll just get the run around and have no real answer other than, "just buy our massively overpriced monitor and it'll work." (I spent over an hour and half on the phone with Apple "tech support" and they couldn't even understand the basics of how their own systems work in regard to monitors...I had it on speaker phone the whole time and even my Luddite girlfriend couldn't believe what she was hearing...)

Since Apple refuses to correct this situation, I used some resources online and made it cut and dry. This issue is now fixed for me, and it can be for you as well.

It's a shame we can't get official support from Apple to fix their own systems, you have to rely on some knucklehead on the internet instead. ....well hey, kids...

Download this, "it just works."

That'd be brilliant if I didn't already have another monitor plugged in there. And since Apple's hardware in this machine doesn't support DP1.2, I can't daisy chain. HDMI is not only for TV connections, man. Not to mention, RGB can be used with TVs as well...My PS3 for example, sends RGB.

The fact that Apple made it impossible to turn such a basic setting on or off is ridiculous. The fact that I have to "hack" my OS to make it work is unbelievably lame. It took me two days to set up a very basic two monitor extended desktop system and have the colors match.

This should not be a problem in this day in age. And the fact that Apple refused to help me is unforgivable and I should be given a refund on my AppleCare since they have yet to be able to actually fix any problems I've had.

(By the way... I'm SUPER angry and annoyed right now at how much time I've wasted just trying to hook a monitor up properly to my computer... I do this for a living, I know all the ins and outs on a professional level....the fact that it was this difficult for me is completely ridiculous.)

Well...to be honest: There are some problems. Everything is not fine and dandy, I can tell...

- Striped look on solid darker colours

- When turing brightness and contrast way up in sRGB preset mode, the screen goes kind of pink (are you not able to fine adjust in this mode?)

- I also have a dark spot on the screen, which of course have nothing to do with the "found as TV-dilemma".

It has to do with how color is sent to the monitor. With DisplayPort, color is interpreted and sent as digital RGB values. As HDMI, it uses a TV broadcast color mode. HDMI is very useful to video editors. You use the computer's DisplayPort connector to a computer monitor to do your editing on (such as in Premiere Pro), and a good to high quality HD TV on the HDMI connection as your color reference output. Because an RGB signal isn't really the same thing (as for as the computer is concerned), trying to use a computer monitor as both your editor and reference monitor for how your final video will look on a TV isn't easy.

FYI: If you use my "hack" here, it will get around this problem. It's silly of Apple to block it if you want to use dual monitors; having a different color space is no bueno. Also, Fredrik, make sure you set your monitor itself to RGB as well. HDMI can handle RGB, no problem. It's also silly of Apple to force a 709-type color space out through HDMI no matter what you plug into it... It should be whatever your monitor is set to as long as it's not something super funky.

Hello.

Well, the screen is connected via MDP -> DP with one cable. No HDMI is involved, the Dell takes DP directly. The thing is, I think the colors look as they should, and I also get the info that i get ARGB from the computer. The screen itself turn RGB on when connected. The only thing that tells me that everything in not alright is the info in screen settings telling me thera are 60hz and 50hz options, and that the system info says "tv: yes". I can also tell my screen is found as tv when i look in the airplay menu.

But...the colors look like they should, I think....witch might be weird. Could the computer send a OK RGB-signal and even though tell me the external screen is a TV, and has this anything to do with me using the DisplayPort? I actually tried a script (might be yours), and the TV-status was gone. But the colors looked exactly like before, I guess...

I have also irregular flicker on the screen from time to time, which actually got worse yesterday - then i powered the screen down.

Besides that, i also have found a darker spot on the screen. I will try and return the screen to Dell.

Thanks for trying to help me here.

Regards,

Fredrik

To make things a bit clearer, I've not connected the MBP to the HDMI port on the screen, but to the display port. Even though I get the info that my external display is a TV. But, from what I've understood - I would really see a difference (in a bad way) if I was getting the YPbPr-signal. I have tried the script and the information regarding that the screen should be TV, well it disappeared together with the TV-hz settings in the screen preferences in OS X. I also got normal info in Airplay (that said my main, external screen was a TV). So...that is good. But there is no difference, from what I can see, regarding sharpness of text, colors etc. This might be understandable, cause I think I've already have a RGB signal from the MBP via the MDP-port, right? Or...am I not seeing something here?

The issues I have got is:

- Vertical thin, thin lines over the screen. Visible on darker areas, especially on dark grey (like the dark toolbar on top, if you have chosen that look), or the dark color of the dock. But it can also be seen on other parts. The weird thing about this is that it seems like its coming and going...

- For a while I thought the text was blurred, but I think it's just the way OS X handles antialiasing on fonts. Regarding this, and the screen size together with that the screen only is 1080p, probably makes the text a bit blurry - who knows? Well, its not very disturbing, but I did notice it.

- The last problems happened just a couple of days ago, actually I think it shown up after the 10.11.2 update. Firs of all I had flickering...well, bad flickering all over the external screen. It really scared me, so I unplugged the screen from the MBP. Then weird graphic glitches started to pop up in Safari - but this time on the MBP internal screen. Parts of the screen was really corrupt...and looked really weird. You have two videos of the problems here:

Flicker on the external screen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDOamtyFV_0

Graphic glitches on the internal laptop screen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzUuPFMb9rk

Since I got a feeling that "something" was wrong about the screen, I got it replaced by a new unit which I installed today.

The thing is - the vertical lines (darker-lighter-darker-lighter etc) is still there. Could this specific problem has to do with electronic interference of some sort. I'm thinking cables lying too close too each other, in this case the power cord to the external screen, and the Display Port-cable. I have not tried to move the cables and see the results yet, but I will.

Since the "worse part" of the graphic problems was shown a while after the stripes/lines was showing up, I'm a bit worried to use the new screen I got. What if there's something wrong with the MBP graphic board (which I guess is a part of the main board), and from that port some electric "pops" or similar is going to my screen, which will brake it?

I actually contacted an auth Apple repair center, who thought it might be the logic board. But I'm not convinced. Some users have reported graphic problems in for example Safari after the 10.11.2 update. And this was in Safari and after the update. But it could not explain the massive flicker I had on the external Dell screen, could it? If so - then it seems like the logic board is broken, or the graphic parts of it.

Tell me: What of the problems above could be related to the "sen as a TV"-problem? The stripes/lines? The flicker? The graphic glitches? Hm.. to be honest, I'm not sure at all... First I thought the stripes absolutely had to do with it, cause i was thinking "hm..maybe it's something interlaced...something". But then I got the fix / script - and the lines was still there. I actually found some thread at Toms hardware about this problem, but I never got a clue what the writer did to solve it. I guess he turned the Dell screen back to the store, and got his money back. The problem is - I like this screen in many ways, the close to 100% RGB beeing one of them. =)

Before I decide to take my computer to be checked (which could cost me a lot of money if no hardware fault is found) - what would you suggest? I also reinstalled El Capitan over the old installation, just to...I dont know..see if something looked better. And actually - I had mixed swedish and english dialog windows when shutting down and restarting OS X, and they are all in Swedish now. So it was not for nothing...

I'm very thankful for every little advice or hint I could get...
