Confusion about apple id and icloud accounts when swapping iphones

Hi

Am sure there’s nothing unusual about this but swapping iphones has created some confusion for wife and I.

Background is that she has new iphone 6 and I’ve inherited her iphone 4s. She is “backing up” everything from the old phone to the new one via icloud but the process is taking days.

I’ve been advised to create a new apple id account and have done so (after logging out of her account) and now installed a few of my own apps from the app store with my details. There are a number of apps still on the old phone and two of these require updates. However, when I try and install with my apple id the password is rejected (presumably as they are linked to hers?). In essence:

1. Is the delay in updating the apps on the old phone slowing down the back up process on the new phone?

2. Does the back up move or copy apps from one to another?

3. When (if?) the back up process finishes, can I delete apps which I no longer want without them disappearing from the new phone?

4. The old phone now has my apple id which is correct but still shows my wife’s icloud address next to icloud in settings. Can I delete/amend/log out of her icloud and then create my own icloud address as I did with apple id?

Sorry post is so long but we genuinely are confused.

Thanks for your time.

Many thanks for succinct response.

In relation to 1, can it take days for the process to complete? (wife's phone accessing wifi most of each day)

Also in relation to 1, do I need to update the apps in question? (with my wifes apple id)

In relation to 2: the guy in apple store said that apps would be uploaded from old phone to icloud and then picked up by new phone from icloud. Does that equate to your explanation?

Thanks for response to 3.

In relation to 4: I can't find a method of signing out of icloud as I did with itunes id.I'm just not sure if if/how I create a new icloud account when it's currently in may wife's name on the phone?

Will delete and re-download apps as recommended.

Thanks

1. No. Is she plug onto wall power supply while restoring from iCloud backup? She should.

If you are not using the app, you can delete it or update it using your wife's Apple ID & password.

2. Apps are not part of a backup, only apps' data. (the iPhone settings is part of a backup and has your apps listing so it will download from iCloud.

3. You're welcome.

4. Settings > iCloud > scroll to the bottom and tap the red Sign Out

Note: You can use the same Apple ID for iCloud, you do not have to create a new iCloud ID (Apple ID)

Note:

Actually before you setup your wife's iPhone as yours, you should first ask your wife to switch Find My iPhone Off in

Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone with her Apple ID and password

then set iPhone as new in

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings

Thanks again

My wife tells me that her phone is still backing up. This is four days after the process was initiated by guy in apple store. Not clear how plugging into main power supply helps process. Apple guy just emphasised need for wifi.

Bit of a long shot but could the fact that I've yet to sign out of her icloud and create account with existing Apple id. Could that be causing the glitch with back up?

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

When iPhone goes to sleep, Wi-Fi is shut off (to save battery) so doing something with iCloud will be a problem.

Only way to ensure Wi-Fi connection while sleeping is to plug iPhone into a power supply.

The second answer is no.

You can sign out regardless.

If restoring from backup is in process, you cannot use the iPhone until it's finished.

So I don't quite understand what you are saying "Settings confirms this with added warning not to sign out of icloud account while restore in progress etc etc. "

Maybe you should have a second login user account on your PC as well so things don't get messed up.

Try backing up using computer iTunes, once done you can also also do iCloud backup, read below:

Hi again

Don't have iphone 6 at moment but can assure you that not a figment of my imagination. What I meant was that there is

some sort of status message in settings that the the phone is restoring from icloud. I will clarify exactly tomorrow when I speak to her.

Not 10% sure what second log in user account on pc refers to.

Both phones are 16Gb capacity but usage would be probably less than average.

I blame the guy in Apple store as he precipitated the action which caused this! Only joking-much appreciate your advice in seeking resolution to this frustrating problem.
