Q: compressor 'icod' codec on MOV files

I have some old Final Cut Pro processed MOV files. Apparently these original files used the 'ICOD' codec in them.

My Final Cut Pro X does not recognize these files when I import. And I need to do some re-editing with them.

Would Compressor be an alternative to re-encode these into MP4 for example? I don't want to buy this software only to realize it will not handle these.

CCan you open the file in the QuickTime or not? If not it probably won't wor kin Compressor. iCod I think is Apple Intermediate. It should work in FCP.

HHave you downloaded the Additional Content from the FCP menu?

Tried the "Additional Content" from the FCP menu... mine just launches the AppStore looking for updates. And I have all current updates! Perhaps something I should download elsewhere?

CCan you open the file in the QuickTime? If not use Media Inspector to get complete details about the media spec. I problem may not be the video.

Tried these files on more than one machine... including a Windows machine.

These files were part of a older MacPro I had a while ago with FCP7. They did work on that.... I literally have the HD from that machine and I am pulling the files across to the new one.

Additional Content from the FCP menu just takes me to the AppStore looking for updates.

QuickTime cannot play them. ICOD is the codec it seems to want.

Go to your computer system Library to the QuickTime folder and see if these two components are installed

IIf those components are in the system Library then the file should open unless there's s permission problem. In info try unlocking it and change it to read/write for everyone.

Just thought of something

In FCP 7 when you render, I seem to remember a check box saying something like "keep movie Self contained".... Something like that.

Would that have something to do as to why they don't play on a different Mac?

YYou mean that a reference movie was made, not self-contained? How long is the movie supposed to be?

Between 30 seconds and two minutes I'd say. One or two maybe 6 minutes.
