can't back-up iPhone not enough disk space

I am getting a message while trying to back up my iPhone 5s that says "this iPhone can't be back-up because there is not enough space on this computer." This would be easy to fix if it were true and it isn't. I have 255 gigs of free space on this computer. I then tried backing up to the cloud and still got the same message. Any thoughts on this?

I am using a macbook pro 2011 version running Yosemite. iTunes has been updated and so has the iPhone.

Not sure what the issue could be.

Hi Joe,

If you have difficulty making a backup of your iPhone, the place to start troubleshooting you have chosen is great - making sure the iTunes software and your iOS version are updated. There are a few other things I would suggest, detailed in this article -

The error message may be in error. Sometimes an app with corrupt data can prevent a backup from completing, and occasionally the wrong error message is displayed. If it was only your Mac my first guess would be a permissions problem, which can be resolved by using the Disk Utility to repair permissions. But, as it happens with iCloud backups also my vote is for an app with corrupt data.

Solution found to "this iPhone can't be back-up because there is not enough space on this computer" despite there are tons of GBs:

A coupe of days ago, I had same problem with my iPhone 4s with latest iTunes version on windos8.Really annoying

I tried backing up several times until I noticed that in each try the % (of something unspecified on the left upper corner of the iTunes windows near the iPhone icon) kept increasing. Also I checked the location of the latest backup I saw that a new directory was added called snapshot with new files.

So I simply kept trying Backup again and again (without transfer new purchases from iPhone to pc) with the % increasing in each try until it succeeded completely. Then I backed up once more with "transfer new purchases" and then it succeeded as well and also the said % reached 100%. Voila
