Kernal Panic - hfs_UNswap_BTNode: invalid node kind

Since the end of October, I have been having kernel panics almost nightly. I have dismounted any external drives, and any internal ones that I don't need. I disabled time machine b/c I thought maybe that was doing it.

I can't seem to find any information on this "hfs_UNswap_BTNode: invalid node kind" variant, but my suspicion is that it has something to do with a disk or something since its "hfs". My machine is a 2008 Mac Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1. My main drive is a mercury accelsior PCIe SSD.

What I would really love to know is what hfs_UNswap_BTNode: invalid node kind means.

You have a Mac Pro 3,1 2008 model 42 lb silver tower. Its Xeon Processor feature Error Correcting memory. as long as you do not have the detective kernel panic, machine check, you do NOT have a memory problem.

Messages that begin with "hfs" are sent to you by the Mac OS Extended Hierarchical File System. That is a Disk Directory or Drive problem. If you do not already have a Trusted Backup, that should be your TOP Priority.

Once that is under control, you should consider having a new Drive on hand, as you may need it soon.

--------

Boot to Recovery mode, and run Disk Utility (Repair Disk). As long as it changes something, run it again until it fixes everything or gets stuck.

Feb 18, 2015 5:18 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Grant,

I have a good backup. I have taken all of the drives out of my machine except my boot drive which is an SSD. I have run the repair disk on all of them, and it doesn't turn anything up. I don't really understand how that can be. OWC said they would take the drive back and test it and replace it if they find anything. But I have a feeling that its a waste of time b/c they are going to run diagnostics on it, and it will pass.

Do you think Disk warrior would be better?

Feb 18, 2015 5:32 PM in response to drnif

That message is likely to be a complaint about the directory structure on the drive.

Anything you do that punches up the Directory, including erasing the drive and starting over, or building a replacement directory with Disk Warrior may improve things.

Disk Warrior may not be able to do any better. ¿ is it worth the price of Disk Warrior if you can just erase the drive and re-install and have a fresh Directory?

OWC will likely replace the drive if you press them to do so.

My old advice would have been to be certain you were running TRIM Enabler, but that has become very complicated under Yosemite.

Feb 18, 2015 6:28 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Grant,

I spoke to OWC a few months ago about trim enabler and this type of drive and they said don't use it b/c it has something on board that does that. I do have new information though. I spoke to disk warrior (i was already a customer) a few weeks ago, and the guy I spoke to there said to boot from a clean disk and run disk warrior on the SSD I'm using as my OS drive now. I did that. .. 2 times. Both times ended in the machine rebooting itself when it got to the phase "Verifying Directory Data". This was after it supposedly rebuilt the structure. Now, that being said, the drive I booted off of was an internal drive connected to one of their "caddys" through the Accelsior PCIe SSD card VIA eSATA. So, I don't know if it freaked out because the drive I booted off of was connected to the one it was fixing ... I'm grasping at straws now.

Here is the new "panic" that was recorded during those incidents.

Linc,

Thanks for the information. The first test I'm going to try is ... I am going to put a new OS on an internal drive and see if I have the same disk warrior problem by reorganizing the accelsior.

Then, Do you think I can clone the accelsior, take it out and run that as a test to see if the panics go away? If I clone the drive at least I can save some time. It might even be a better test b/c I'm using the exact same OS just different hardware.

Okay, here is an update. Using the newly installed OS I was able to use disk warrior to repair the Accelsior. The repaired stuff in the disk warrior report didn't look all that significant, but it WAS able to repair it, which it hadn't been able to do using the external drive hooked up to the assessor. I am going to let it sit over night and see if it panics.

Sorry, I just saw that last one. I had already done the disk warrior test. The only thing is that the panic is intermittent, so I guess at some point if it hasn't happened, then its the Accelsior? If it is, then what? Do I send it back and get them to replace it, or are you thinking its just a function of it being in there that's causing the issue?

I wanted to let you know that I spoke with OWC and they replaced the unit under warranty. After receiving it, they said it failed the SMART test. Plus, I cloned the SSD and just put it on a mechanical hard drive and it has been working for weeks without any kernel panic. I am reluctant to use the new one for the OS / boot drive. I liked the speed, but I can't deal with the reliability issues. I am going to put a plain SSD in, and use it, and just use the accelsior for non critical high speed applications .... like a scratch disk, Lightroom catalog, etc. After having 2 fail, I don't want to be bit by that again.
