Mail problem

Can anybody help please? My iPad will not receive emails on tiscali ( talk talk) account. It sends them but wil not receive any. I contacted Apple they told me to follow the steps I've already tried. Change the outgoing server port to 25 keep the incoming to 110. Yesterday it was the other way round, it would not send! But received! Today it's swapped. I'm so confused. Please help

Not if the email provider does not support IMAP. You have to go with what they support. It all seems funny that one day it is sending and then another receiving mail that is failing. That makes me think it is not an iPhone issue but a mail provider issue. If you have removed the account from the phone and then added it back, setting it up as the provider stated, then something is going wrong on their end.

Did you talk to talk talk, or did you just work from a website? Also, where the iPhone mail setup says that the username and password are optional in a couple of places, many mail providers require them.

It doesn't matter whether it's an iPhone or an iPad, the operating system and the settings are the essentially the same for both devices and for the purposes of setting up mail accounts, they settings should be identical on both devices.

I assume that you can send and receive your email on a computer or haven't you tried that? If nothing else is working, maybe it's time to contact talk talk support by phone and get help.

Yes the main computer sends and receives emails fine. It's weird as when I spoke to an apple support person they informed me to change outgoing server to 25 which I'd tried many times before and it just reads verifying for ages and the screen freezes, but after that we received an email from the apple support man!! And I could reply back even though I had to close the frozen screen down as it wouldn't stop verifying. But that was it, it only worked that once! Now it's just back to sending emails and not receiving any.

If you check the computer, does it show that the account is POP? If so, and when trying to set it up on the iPhone it is trying to set up as IMAP, then you have to do something to "fool" the phone into creating a POP account.

When you go to add the account, purposely make a mistake in your password. After that, the account will not verify. That will take you to a screen that allows you to choose POP or IMAP. Go ahead and choose POP, and enter the account details. Again, make sure you have gotten the correct settings from your email provider. See what happens.
