How do I get rid of "Other" and restore my lost memory?

I have a 65 GB 5th generation iPod Touch and after first syncing unit with ITunes I have almost 20 GB of "Other" gobbling up my memory. What is this "Other" since I didn't load anything extra? How do I get rid of it and restore my lost memory?

iPod touch, iOS 8.1.3, New 65 GB

An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
