my friends iPhone 5 16GB White running iOS 8.1.3 is unable to send SMS messages on the Vodafone UK network. Attempted to reset messages but no solution has yet been found.

Has the SIM card been activated for sending messages by the carrier?
Check Settings/Phone to see if there is an option to activate messaging using a code
Yes, the sim has been activated by the carrier, This problem occured a few days ago.
Did you try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button of about 10sec, until the Appel logo comeback again?
You will not lose data by resetting.
If this does not work, restore from the latest backup:
