i was given an Apple G5 computer with a bad power supply and no hard drive. I was wondering how to get the operating system and software needed to operate the computer.

Hi,

iOS is for iPads & iPhones, OSX is what you need, 10.5.8 the highest a G5 can run, which is quite old now, but I use t everyday, I might ask what you wish to accomplish or do with it, as it may not be worth it if it cannot do it. 🙂

Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

minimum system requirements

* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

* DVD drive for installation

* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.

Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

SATA drives will work fine in the G5.

What I think won't work is that 1000W Power Supply. Could be for a Windows PC and NOT a Mac.

The highest power supplies in PowerMac G5s are 600W units.

My feeling is that Macs need the hardware and components that are exact or close replacements to the originals.

You need to find a power supply that matches either the one that was already in your G5 or one that is a little more powerful and closer to the one that was used in your PowerMac G5.

Restore Tiger 10.4 & Leopard 10.5 DVDs are available from Apple by calling 1(800) 275-2273. Have your serial number ready. Have your credit card ready too. There may be a small fee.
