Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

Hi there,

Since I updated my macbook pro to Yosemite, it has become very slow. I even have to use firefox instead of safari become it makes it even slower, and apparently safari is supposed to be one of the best browsers (correct me if i'm wrong).

Anyways, I have downloaded Etrecheck, but I do not know what to understand from its analysis.

Thank you in advance.

Y

Safari runs faster than Firefox on a new setup. However, you seem to have used Safari in the past, so it has a lot of files saved regarding your use of Safari, whereas Firefox is "brand new", so it doesn't have all the plugins etc installed.

You can post the etrecheck report here to allow us to see if something is wrong or to tell you which settings are slowing down the mac; Most of the time, people have antivirus, which are useless, if you have one, uninstall it.

The best way to get the mac to be faster is to run a clean install of OS X Yosemite.

If you have 2GB of RAM, you should consider upgrading the RAM too.

    Post the etrecheck list.

As for browsers: Safari is the best, but not as speedy anymore because of all security built in.

Chrome is probably fastest, but a crap programming: unsafe and resource hungry. do not use it (in fact do not use any Google app).

Firefox is fast and safe, Opera is fast and safe.

Yosemite in my macs is faster than the already fast Mavericks, you need at least 4GB of Ram.

    Very good !

-- Yes I meant Boom. Since this puts a kext in the very core of the OS, it creates problem, even if it is a "signed" kext.. Better uninstall it and use a similar but less obtrusive  (e.g. from the Appstore) software.

-- CleanMyMac is still there: this is really crap and must be uninstalled, this is version 2 which is a bit easier to uninstall:

start CleanMyMac and in the left panel choose Uninstall (I think it is #6 in the list), then uninstall CleanMyMac, you don't need to answer any question on the browser pop up page.

-- Then download  FindAnyFile  from http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

run this app and type  macpaw   in the search field then hold the Alt(option) key and choose the Find button, type your password and in the search list select the entries that it finds, CTL+click and choose  "move to trash"; then type  devmate into the search field and also move those to the trash.

-- In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems,  remove all entries with the minus sign underneath.

    Then restart.

This should bring your mac up to standard.

To be sure you could run another etrecheck list and let me check it.

    Hi Lex,

    Really appreciate your help!

So I've done everything you said, but didn't uninstall Boom, I use it and the other similar appas are not free.

    Great,

    answer two questions:

    1. tell me that you used FindAnyFile and found ..macpaw.. entries and  ..devmate.. entries and deleted them.

    2. is the mac up to standard now or do you still have some issues ?

    Hi Lex,

Yes, I used the FindAnyFile and deleted all filed for macpaw but there were no entries for devmate.

I thinks it seems fine now, Safai is faster but i still prefer using firefox, out of habit I guess.

Do you recommend any app like clean my mac i could use on a weeky basis to clean my mac regularly ?

    Hi again Lex,

So I tried testing the speed of my laptop, and it appears when I try to open Word, Excel or Preview, it takes quite some time to load. Also, every time I open these applications, lots of documents open all at once in both Word, Excel and Preview.

    Thanks in advance.

NO: this is already part of the OS, daily, weekly, monthly !! any cleaning by external apps is counterproductive. And can be crippling even.

So I tried testing the speed of my laptop, and it appears when I try to open Word, Excel or Preview, it takes quite some time to load. Also, every time I open these applications, lots of documents open all at once in both Word, Excel and Preview.

This is very uncommon: when you click one app like Word it should not open any document. In the settings of those apps, set "save autorecovery" to off and in the File-menu->"Recent-Documents"  click "clear list". In SystemPreferences->General set RecentItems to 0 or a small number (like 3).

    Does that help?
