Q: Trouble downloading OS X Mountain Lion

I recently bought OS X Mountain lion and I have redeemed it but every time I hit download I receive this statement "OS X 10.8 requires at least 2 GB of memory". Now to my knowledge there should be ample space on this computer. What should I do? Thank you

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

That refers to your RAM, not your storage. You need to install at least 2 GBs of RAM in the computer in order to run Mountain Lion.

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion

To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later.

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model

                 Identifier 5,1 or later.

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later.

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

I don't know because you need to first tell me exactly which Mac model you have. Or you can look in the user guide that came with the computer for help. If you don't have one you can find it at support.apple.com/manuals. Or take it to a local Apple retailer who can sell you memory and install it for you.

OK, So Either way this is not something I can just download, It needs to be installed, right? I have no idea of the model as I was given this computer and the user guide was not sent with it.

No, you can't download hardware. You do not sound as though you would be comfortable trying to install memory yourself, so it would probably be better to take it in to have that done for you. Or find a technically proficient friend who knows about Macs.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.
