AirPlay doesn't show up on my macbook pro or my iPhone 5s

My software on my computer and my apple tv are up to date and both are connected to the same wifi, but the airplay icon does not show up. AirPlay is not showing up on my phone either, but I have not updated the software yet. Remote app won't work either. I really just want it to work with my computer. Anyone know what the problem could be?

AirPlay Mirroring needs an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404

Your computer may not support AirPlay Mirroring, but you can use another app to mirror your MacBook Pro's screen to the Apple TV. To do it, use AirParrot.
