The short form of the command is -a the long form is --all. (man softwareupdate)

Not disputing you there. Just noticing the documentation gives the example:
softwareupdate --install -allNot sure which documentation you are referring to, but it's wrong. The man page I'm quoting is from Yosemite.
That's not the manual…
