disk drive on a 2008 iMAC is not longer properly

My disk drive on my 2008 iMAC is not working properly. It is the slot loading on the side of the iMAC. It will accept the disk, but it will often eject the disk without mounting it. What do I do? I bought a USB external SuperDrive, but the isn't recognized.
