My mom reads my texts how do i get her to stop!!!

My mom figures out anything rebellious that i do thru text. I know she reads my texts shes told me before, but she never gets on my phone. She said it isnt as easy as i think it is for her to read them... so shes saying she basically can only read certain texts, im guessing the ones that id rather her not to read. How is she doing this and how do i get her to stop????

iPhone 4 (8GB), iOS 6.1.3, Im with AT&T

"She has every right to do this"

Uh, no she doesn't. It's illegal to read other people's mail without asking REGARDLESS how old they are. It can get you fined or even arrested.

If you think it's okay just because someone is under 18 then you are clearly ageist and discriminatory. Don't treat people like second class citizens just because they'renot 18 yet. Children are not property.

Texts are not mail. If the phone and the account are paid for by your parent, they have every right to read the messages. They have the right to cancel the account and take the phone away from you, too.

Of course children are not property; they are children as in not adult. And, like it or not, the reason people under 18 have different rights and privileges than people over 18 is because they lack the experience and brain development to be relied upon to always make good choices.

And people over 18 CAN be relied upon to always make good choices? 😉

The current state of political affairs in the U.S. is answer enough to that. However, they have less excuse. Our victimized teenager forgets that while they may have more restrictions placed on them, they also bear less responsibility for the mistakes they do make.

Are your mother and you using the same Apple ID? If so, that's the problem. Messages app syncs your messages through all the devices with the same Apple ID, so every person who uses your devices can read your messages. It's as simple as disabling the email address or phone number you are using to send the messages in Messages:

  • iPhone, iPad or iPod touch: Settings -> Messages.
  • Mac: open Messages, go to Messages menu (in the menu bar) -> Preferences -> Accounts, and choose your Apple ID.

Are you under the age of majority for your country (in the U.S., that's 18)? If so, then your mother has every right to do this.

However, if she has access to your Apple ID & password, then there's a lot of stuff she has access to, not just your iMessages.

Consider changing th password to your Apple ID as well as your personal email accounts. However, be advised that you run the risk of your mother discovering you've done so, and then simply taking away the iPhone.

Now if you're over 18 (or age of majority) then she does not have a legal right to do this invasion of your privacy. However, depending on who paid for your iPhone, for example, she may actually have the legal right to reclaim her property.

Choose wisely your course of action.
