Q: Apple Configurator not installing updated app versions

Hello all,

I have noticed that when i complete a batch of Ipads using Apple Configurator that apps installed on ipads are marked to be updated.

Before commencing using Configurator I have no apps which require updating in iTunes so I am wondering do i need to "purge" older versions of apps and import updated  versions.

Configurator version 1.7.1

Itunes version 12.1

Mac OS 10.10.2

(Imac 2.66 early 2009)

thanks in advance,

Jon

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

I'm assuming you've been updating the apps in the "My Apps" section of iTunes. In order to get the updated apps into configurator you have to re-import them. Once you have updated all the apps in iTunes open up Configurator and bring up the app list. Click the plus in the bottom of the app list window to add apps to configurator. Choose the apps that were updated and re-import them into configurator (if you sort the app list in Finder by Date Modified it's easy to select which apps you updated). It should prompt you to replace the app version that's currently in configurator. This will replace the app in configurator with the latest version you just downloaded from iTunes. Now when you refresh your iPads it will install the latest version of the app.

I'm having the same issue as jwahau which led me to this article. I am doing just as you describe but the apps do not update. I have found the only way to get the apps to update is to uncheck the box in the app list (which removes it from the devices), refresh, put the check mark back in, and refresh again. Then they will update. This is obviously a major pain and not the way it is designed to operate. We are having this issue with multiple iPad carts. BTW, I am an experienced apple config. user. Thanks!!

Configurator is quirky to say the least so I feel your paint trust me. I currently manage around 1000 iPads for a school and Configurator has been a nightmare since day 1. After you import the updated app into configurator I would try to close out configurator and then launch it again, and then try to refresh the device. It still feels like an unnecessary step but it's still easier then removing the app and reinstalling (while hoping it returns to original place on the device). Make sure you have the latest version of configurator as well. What version of OSX are you using?

Thank you for your suggestions and I will give it a try. I have had pretty good luck with config but agree it can be quirky. I agree that removing apps and re-installing is risky practice. I contacted our apple district rep and he advised me to call support. We have OS Yosemite 10.10.2 and Apple Config 1.7.1. Thanks!

    hello all,

thanks for the responses - with much trepidation i am going to delete and re-import applications in configurator.

I lost 1.5 days work trying to work out why 2 apps out of approximately 20 would not install with the error below,

"0 - this must be redeemed on a IPad"

"38 - Unable to redeem code with iTunes store"

Configurator had registered install codes but would not import.

    well here goes nothing...

Following advice - i have removed and reimported updated applications to Apple Configurator this worked without a hitch - i was able to import the latest versions of 10 applications but..

Upon refreshing one device I was not able to install Garageband even though the codes and application previously loaded about 5 minutes before.  I then stopped the update because it had failed.  After a period of time process stops cleanly. Message in configurator is "insufficient license codes" to install the Garageband.

Ok getting used to this game (not fun) but it fills in my day! Click on the application in Apple Configurator and import redemption codes (again).  After a period of time (long) the message "Finished importing Redemption codes" appears but does not disappear - ie complete.  Apple Configurator is now frozen.

I Force Quit Apple Configurator, all changes (work) is lost and possible the configurator database is now corrupt.  I also now have the bonus of trying to fix another problem to fix.

Whilst the advice above is good & i am not critical of those who replied and would like to thank them. I am nearing the end of the line now with Apple Configurator
