Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you were not able to access your iCloud Mail account on your Mac due to a server error.
According to the System Status page, it does look like some users were unable to access iCloud Mail around the time you received this error:

Removing and re-adding the account was a good step for isolating this behavior, and if the situation has persisted you can find some more troubleshooting tips here:
