Q: Very slow loading on apple TV with high speed internet ?

Hi,

Have Apple TV generation 3.  Up to two weeks ago everything was fine...I have  ~55meg Internet.

Apply TV now wont load films or TV shows - it will load but extremely slowly....its showing 4 hrs for a standard definition film ?

My internet service provider hasn't changed.

My Ipad will play films as normal

I have rest the Apple TY unit back to factory settings and its still the same

the problem seemed to coincide with purchasing the James bond collection 3 weeks ago ??  Not sure if this has any bearing at all ?

Any shed any insight ?

Many Thanks

This isn't rocket science and no, you don't need to be a network diagnostician running iStumbler. I get that some here are trying to be helpful, but it isn't really helping. I have an Apple TV 4 and it is slow as molasses loading screens, playing back, etc. I have a 63 Mbps downstream connection and 5 Mbps upstream. All other devices work just fine. You shouldn't have to jump through all of these hoops and network diagnostics just to get an Apple device to work in an environment where all other devices already function without any pauses, delays, or other issues.

I have the same problem- Apple TV3 says it will take 12 hours+ to download a 100 minute movie on wifi. I have Verizon "high speed" internet, which is the only option here. Speedtest says my download speed on Ethernet is 2.5 Mbps. Is everyone staying home downloading stuff on NYE? So much for watching a movie instead of Dick Clark...

Since the router has to be plugged into the phone line and there isn't a phone jack in the TV room, I don't know how I could manage to plug the apple TV into an Ethernet cable.

I Have a similar issue where iTunes movies and TV shows load very slowly if at all except I am using an ATV4 running the latest software. Last night I tried to watch an episode of game of thrones season 1 and it said 14 hours to load and i left it over night and it still hadn't loaded. It also can happen on newer movies but not as bad. Like others have said Netflix works fine, I have checked my network using speed test, checked my DNS is on auto, reset the Apple TV, phoned my ISP and it still happens. I had the old ATV3 and was hoping by buying the new one it would have sorted out the issue.

    AAny help you be great.

    Thanks

This happened to me last night with my ATV4 and is still going on now.  Tried watching rented and purchased movies, plus purchased TV shows, would get the "wait 3 hours 20 minutes" as they tried to load.  If I play anything through HBO NOW, Youtube, Vimeo, Netflix, they play automatically and without issue.  Have a download speed of 23 Mbps through speedtest.net.  My laptops, iphone, PS4 all have good internet response/speed.  I've reset my airport and the apple TV several times.

I have similar symptoms with my new Apple TV trying to stream iTunes films.  It is plugged directly into my cable modem and running speedtest (available on Apple TV app store) says I have 50mbps connectivity no problem.

Here's the interesting thing: if I kick of a speedtest from my phone or iPad (connected via WiFi to the same cable modem) then the Apple TV suddenly is able to download at a sensible speed for a few minutes.  Similarly, if I stream an iTunes movie to my iPad while trying to stream a movie to my Apple TV then it all works well too.  I understand networking pretty well but I can't figure out an explanation for this.  Very very weird!  Anyone else able to reproduce similar?

I have the same issue with our Apple TV.  SpeedTest shows 86.6 Mbps, but Apple TV will work for a while, then the wheel starts spinning and it says it will be hours before the show will start up again.  This only became an issue after Christmas.  My operating theory us that Apple sold a lot of the new model and they weren't ready for the necessary bandwidth.  Sometimes backing out to the main menu and restarting the show will do the trick, sometimes restarting the Apple TV will do the trick, most times nothing works.  Anyone have a solution?

I too am having similar problems with playing purchased movies from Apple. Very slow load times and frequent pauses when the movie is playing. It started when I switched over from an Apple TV 3 to an Apple TV 4. My internet speeds are 59.5 mbps download and 3.25 mbps uploads. I have an Airport Extreme 5.0 GHZ router. Last night while playing the documentary Amy from a family share purchase (took around 10 minutes to load) the movie paused 20 minutes in and hung indefinitely, so I got fed up and switched over to my old Apple TV, and once I did that the movie played uninterrupted. I'll keep trying and see if the problem continues over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully this isn't a new Apple TV issue.

I have been having all kinds of trouble with an Apple TV in my bedroom that led me to this thread. We even had AT&T come in and update our system/router, etc to max speed. Still no luck with speed. I then moved my Apple TV away from our cable box and this fixed everything. Blazing speed and no more lag. I didn't see this mentioned prior so I would recommend playing with where your Apple TV is located. I am assuming there was some frequency interference even though my network connection was reading full signal strength.

I had the same issue and after reading OUmd post, I realized that I had recently moved my Apple TV beside my cable box.  I moved my Apple TV away from my cable box and everything is fixed.

Has there been a solution to this? This is my exact situation. My ATV3 works fine. Netflix on ATV4 is fine. But cannot plat iTunes movies. It buffers forever.

A Hard reset did the trick for me.  Hold menu and down for six seconds.  That worked as opposed to a soft reset from the settings menu which did not work.  Good luck!

We are  network provider, and what we noticed that Apple content seems to come from 17.x.x.x/8 which is odd. Up until a few weeks ago we used to see iTunes content mostly distributed by 3rd party content providers like Akamai and Limelight, but now all of a sudden it's all coming from Apple. Average stream is floating in 2Mbit...

Switch to other content providers like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and the streams climb to 10, 15, 20mbit...

Did Apple have a fight with some of its content distributors?

Same issues just started for me too.  My internet provider uses fiber and provides 100 Mbps download and upload speeds.  I can no longer rent movies from Apple TV.  I rent from my internet service provider or Amazon prime now.  Will Apple ever fix their video servers?

I have facing the same issue with Apple TV and get all troubleshooting done from my side.

    # Changed its physical location of Apple TV.

    # Checked internet Bandwidth on other devices.

    # Checked Hulu and Netfliex services are working fine.

    # Try to get help from Apple Support via customer care.

    # Reset and restored old Apple TV 3.

    # Checked with new Apple TV 4.

still facing same issue, its legging and slow streaming on all rented and purchased movies and TV Shows.

I guess now it download 1/4 part of whole video then only it can start to play, right now not follow real time streaming in that you can play and stream together while its was work like this earlier.

Please share if any one have correct solution.

    Thanks

Hi - please try: press and hold Down + Menu for 6 seconds.  This will do a restart from the remote.  I have no idea why it worked for me.  I unplugged/replugged and also reset and restarted several times from the settings menu, and neither helped.  But - when I did the restart from the remote with press and hold Down + Menu for 6 seconds, my Apple TV started behaving like the old days and the TV shows and movies start right up.  After two months of frustration I tried it, and it has been working normally now for about two months with no issues.  It is worth a shot.
