Q: how to start an old imac from the start up disc?

My iMac doesn't start.  It hangs in there after I see the apple and the status bar, but it never finishes booting up.  I put the cd with the OS X, but it does the same.

In addition to Joe's advice, also try holding the Option key as you boot up, giving you a list of the drives you can boot up from.
