Is Audacity Safe. Is a sourceforge download for a lame file safe

I have a MacbookPro 2012 with IOS 10.10.2 and I have Audacity Audio Editor 2.0.2 Installed.

(Not sure where I installed Audacity from.)

The issue:

Audacity will not export to MP3 and says I need a "Lame" file.

The file required is libmp3lame.dylib

My key question is: - Is a sourceforge download safe?

I have seen sourceforge described elsewhere as a 'cess pit' (full of trojans etc).

Currently I have a workaround by using 'Smartconverter'

Any suggestions and alternatives to Audacity or where to get a safe LAME file welcomed!

(Audacity has been remarkably good for a free program)

Thanks
